“Rock Stars create unique, special experiences for everybody”

They say that business is easy until you introduce people. While it is true that interpersonal dynamics can be tricky to solve, there are a few people out there who have it down to a science, and that is what we are here to discuss on this week’s Inspiring Leaders Podcast.

Former Rock Star Alan Schaefer is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Banding People Together, a super group of behaviorists, strategists and rock stars who teach people how to be their best selves when working with others.    Ever since is Rock Star Days, touring with The Band, Alan has been fascinated with Interpersonal Dynamics and the previously unsolved mystery of how some people can make irresistible rhythms together while others just fall into distortion and sad reverb.

“If you’re getting the band in the room, how will you create the vibe or the magic?”

This fascination led Alan to create Banding’s “True Collaboration℠ Methodology” which includes their own diagnostic called “The Collaborative Harmony Index”.  Now, companies like NASA, Netflix, Cisco and Verizon have all bought front row seats to Alan Schaefer’s unique solution, and it is creating harmonies for all of them.

Alan has been described as a “Maestro of Human Capital Excellence” and brings his unique perspective as a successful entrepreneur, recording artist, songwriter and consultant to his current work. Listen in to this week’s show to learn how Alan and his team of Rock Stars are solving the Interpersonal Dynamics Puzzle, and laying down some groovy tunes at the same time!

e049 The Business of Experience with XPR CEO Joelle Parenteau

“Life is about creating and living experiences worth sharing”

Can you build a business around experience? Every now and then, someone comes along that sees the world a little differently.  Joelle Parenteau has built several successful companies based on people’s experiences. In fact, she has taken the concept of providing the customer with an experience, strapping it onto a rocket and blasting it into a whole new orbit.

“When I hear things like ‘that can’t be done’, I see it as a challenge.”

Joelle is one of those founders who doesn't seem to understand the meaning of the word “Impossible”. She says to her it simply sounds like a challenge, and there's nothing she loves more than a good challenge. So much so that she decided to make this the mission of her second startup, XPR: creating access to world-class icons and ultra-rare experiences. Joelle humbly concedes that if she had a superpower, it would be making connections to make things happen.

“Inspired Leadership is about helping the right people connect”

And with her go big or go home mentality she thought what better place to start than the Entertainment Capital of the World itself - Vegas. From playing poker with the pros to a fight night with world champions, exclusive chef's tables and race days with NASCAR pros - she's a pro at making the impossible, possible.

Be inspired with this out of the box thinker, creative entrepreneur, amazing CEO and passionate person. Listen to this 20 minute episode for all the fabulous details.

e047 Intolerable Bosses: The Micro Manager

5/6/2018

The Leadership Brothers are back to expose one of the most common types of Intolerable Bosses, the dreaded Micro Manager.  Everyone agrees, Micro Managing is far too common in today’s workplace. It seems like every organization has at least one Micro Manager.

Exposing the Micro Manager
The Micro Manager is constantly staring over your shoulder, obsessing over every move you’re making, every step you take. They want to know what your going to do before you even do it. They want to now what’s in your calendar, who you are meeting with and when, what’s going to happen as a result of that meeting and what time you will have specific results completed.

The impact of Micro Management is devastating. This brand of Intolerable Boss has an overpowering compulsion to make it clear to themselves and everybody else that they are in charge. So the first and most obvious impact is that they’re the bosses that rob you of autonomy.

Another impact that Micro Managers have is that, because they insist on being involved in every detail of your work, and are more concerned about specifics, such as font size, rather than the big picture, they are stealing opportunities for their people to learn, grow and develop new skills. Micro Managers are obsessed with controlling the decisions and the outcomes. They own it, you are nearly their Minions doing the work that they decide is important.

The world revolves around these Intolerable Bosses. While they’re sucking the soul out of the organization’s culture, they are also creating a Blast Radius of demoralized employees all around them. This, in turn, impacts productivity, stifles innovation and it pretty much ensures that every customer is going to become a Demoter, rather than a Promoter.

How to Survive a Micro Manager
(listen to the show for details on each)
1. Figure out if you ARE Micromanaged

2. Don’t fight

3. Seek To Understand

4. Look In The Mirror

5. Increase trust

6. Find Out What They Need To Loosen His/Her Grip

7. Make upfront agreements

8. Keep your boss in the loop

9. Give feedback, only if appropriate

As we’ve said on previous Intolerable Bosses shows, if none of these strategies work, you need to ask yourself if you really want to work there. If your work environment has become toxic, you should consider transferring to another part of the company or finding another job.
